Why Become a Contractor?

The two main reasons why people leave the world of permanent work behind, and become a contractor; the freedom that contracting provides, and the potential financial rewards you can achieve compared to traditional employment.

When you become a contractor, you also have the added benefit of becoming your own boss. Whilst you have the responsibility of finding new contracts, negotiating your contract rate, and having to deal with recruitment agents, as a contractor you also have much more control over the types of work you do and the location of your work.

When it comes to contract work the more flexible you can be the better, as contracts are not often the perfect fit. However, contracting provides you with the comfort of knowing that should the contract not be what you had expected you will have the chance to look for something more suitable in a short period of time.

Contractors receive higher headline rates, as clients do not have the burden of payroll costs, providing employee benefits, or the hassle of employment rules and regulations. Furthermore, more highly skilled and well-established independent contractors are often able to charge premium rates for their services.

The future of the industry

The Office of National Statistics shows that the demand for contractors is expected to grow in coming years, a clear sign that there will be many opportunities for UK contractors.

There are several reasons behind the rise in the number of UK contractor jobs; somewhat ironically, economic stagnation is the most significant. Slow economic growth forces businesses to become cautious and as a result they open their doors to short-term flexible staff so that unnecessary expenses affiliated with permanent full-time staff are done away with.

Remember

If things don’t work out for whatever reason, at least you have the luxury of knowing that the demand for permanent staff is very strong.
